My research is a mix of basic and applied work in the field of biochemistry/molecular biology in relation to the meat quality issue in pigs known as boar taint. For my PhD. I studied the transport and uptake of boar taint compounds and identified a novel pathway regulating boar taint development. I am currently working with Dr. Jim Squires to develop targeted solutions for boar taint that can be applied on an individual basis to animals with a genetic predisposition for a favourable treatment outcome. This precision agriculture approach is the first to consider all sources of individual variability contributing to boar taint development and will hopefully eliminate the need for castration in the swine industry.
