Education:

  • Bachelor of Bio-Resource Management, Equine Management 2020
  • Current M.Sc. coursework student, Animal Nutrition

Academics:

Currently, I am an M.S.c student working with Dr. Anne Kate Shoveller. I graduated from the B.B.R.M (EQN) program at the University of Guelph I''m looking forward to complete my masters at U of G, specializing in animal nutrition. For my M.S.c research, I will be working along side with M.S.c student Claire Dulude to look at the safety of  black solider fly larvae in contrast to soybean meal for horses.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) Hermetia illucens is a common household fly found in North America and Europe. The larvae from the fly is converted into organic waste from food which is then turned into high-quality proteins. The black soldier fly has not been studied yet for horses, has been looked for different species such as the pig and dog. Recently, the digestibility and safety of black soldier fly larvae that has been dried and BSFL oil in dogs. From this study, it was concluded that both BSFL meal and oil were well tolerated by dogs. Neither the oil or the meal had an effect on the health of the dogs and can be concluded that it is safe to use. (Freel et al. 2021).

During my undergrad, I worked alongside Dr. Pearson on research project course. This project looked at the heart rate for performance horses post exercise. Due to COVID-19 I was able to look at the heart rate on my personal horses.

A little bit about me:

I have been around horses since I was 6 years old and started riding when I was 10. I am a competitive hunter horseback rider on the A circuit. During my undergrad, EQN 4020 Advanced Equine Nutrition was one of my personal favorite classes. This class developed my knowledge of a horse’s diet and really sparked my interest in nutrition.
